MAC-TNCA-Airlines final likely

Chennai Aug. 25. An Indian Airlines - MAC-TNCA XI final appeared likely at the conclusion of the second day in the Sahara-Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament semifinals here on Sunday.

While MAC-TNCA XI, after gaining a 26-run lead over Combined Districts, was at a commanding 149 without loss in its second essay at ICL-Guru Nanak, Indian Airlines, ahead by 128 against TNCA president's XI in the first innings, had made 78 for no loss at SPIC-YMCA.

MAC-TNCA skipper S. Suresh (61 batting, 68b, 4x4), who is having a fine game, and a strokeful Anand George (81 batting, 75b, 10x4, 1x5), put the Districts attack to the sword raising an unbeaten 149 in just 23 overs.

Suresh, with a hundred in an adverse situation and three Districts wickets bowling seamers, already under his belt, proved hard to dismiss yet again, while Anand George launched into the bowling with some sizzling strokes, especially square off the wicket on the off-side.

Earlier, the Districts required at least one frontline batsman to produce a long innings, but found there was none to play such a role, with the side being dismissed for 208 in 76.2 overs.

Opener V. Gautham (37) promised for a while before he was picked up at square-leg off Suresh, while off-spinner D. Dandapani (three for 46) got rid of Noor-ul-Riaz (10), S. Sriram accepting the catch at slip.

Paceman M.R. Shrinivas grabbed two key middle-order wickets, having Vasanth Saravanan (28) caught behind by P. Raju, and breaching R. Satish's (25) defence. T. Dushyanth (36) offered some resistance, however, Districts was still 26 short of the MAC-TNCA score of 234, when he was consumed by Suresh (three for 25). Districts has a hard day's job on Monday.

The TNCA president's XI, an outfit comprising promising youngsters, also has an uphill task ahead, a lack of application by the batsmen letting the side down in the first innings.

On a placid pitch and a fast outfield at SPIC-YMCA, and against a steady but by no means threatening attack, the President's XI would have got much closer to Indian Airlines' 366 had it simply lasted the full 90 overs. However, the team was bowled out for a disappointing 238 in 68.4 overs.

For Airlines, left-arm spinner Bablu Kumar (four for 52) was once again among the wickets and he was supported well by another left-armer Sonu Sharma (two for 87) and offie Ishan Ganda (three for 65) but the spinners were helped by the inability of the President's XI batsmen to consolidate on starts.

Jesubabu Honeymen (27), Aaditya Srikkanth (21), S. Badrinath (44, 59b, 4x4, 1x6), R. Prasanna (38) and J. Harish (18), had all done the early hard work, before falling when in sight of bigger things. In Prasanna's case, he perished while attempting a risky single.

With partnerships hardly developing, the side lost wickets at regular intervals and despite some lusty blows from S. Mahesh (32) and D.J. Gokulakrishnan (27 not out) towards the end and finished 128 runs adrift.

Airlines had increased the lead to 206 when the stumps were drawn, openers Ravneet Ricky (40 batting, 64b, 5x4) and Munish Sharma (30 batting) putting on an unbeaten 78 in 19 overs.

The scores:

At ICL-Guru Nanak: MAC-TNCA XI 234 & 149 for no loss in 23 overs (Anand George 81 batting, S. Suresh 61 batting) vs Combined Districts 208 in 76.2 overs (Dilip Sarathy 26, V. Gautham 37, Vasanth Saravanan 28, R. Satish 25, T. Dushyanth 36, D. Dandapani three for 46, S. Suresh three for 25).

At SPIC-YMCA: Indian Airlines 366 & 78 without loss in 19 overs (Ravneet Ricky 40 batting, Munish Sharma 30 batting) vs TNCA president's XI 238 in 68.4 overs (Jesubabu Honeymen 27, S. Badrinath 44, R. Prasanna 38, S. Mahesh 32, D.J. Gokulakrishnan 27 not out, Bablu Kumar four for 52, Ishan Ganda three for 65).
