India moves to second spot

NEW DELHI AUG. 25. India maintained its unbeaten run to move to the second spot, behind China `A', after seven rounds of the World Youth (under-16) Chess Olympiad in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday evening.

On a day when two rounds were played, the fourth seed India defeated Indonesia 2.5-1.5 and recorded a similar victory over the top seed Ukraine. India now faces Uzbekistan on Monday.

China, which led with Ukraine after five rounds, defeated the latter 3.5-0.5 and went on to end the day at 22 points. India was second with 19.5 points, followed by Indonesia (19) and Uzbekistan (18).

According to information reaching here, when India played Indonesia, Asian junior champion Deepan Chakravarty suffered his first loss of the tournament as he went down to Susanto Megaranto on the top board. Deep Sengupta beat Tirta Chandra Purnama, G. Rohit drew with Taufik Halay and Abhijit Gupta got the better of Surya Wahyudi.

Somak Palit, the reigning National sub-junior champion was rested for today's matches after he had suffered defeats in matches against Kazakhstan in the third round and to China in the fifth.

Against Ukraine, it was Abhijit Gupta who drew first blood and emerged victorious on the fourth board. Deepan Chakravartty also got back to his winning ways by beating Alexander Areshchenko. Deep Sengupta, however, went down to Sergey Karjakin, who became the youngest in the world to meet the GM-title requirements. G. Rohit was again involved in a draw.

In the earlier rounds, India blanked Malaysia `C' 4-0, beat Malaysia 3.5-0.5, defeated Kazakhstan and Romania by an identical margin of 2.5-1.5 before drawing with China 2-2.
