Hockey
In a keenly contested deciding match, the Dutch played to a plan and profited by two goals by the penalty corner specialist Bram Lomans, although his first goal for the lead came off a penalty stroke. Close on half-time, Matthijs Brouwer scored the other goal for the Dutchmen while the only goal for the Aussies came from Jaime Dwyer, who became the top scorer with a tally of four in the tournament. The Netherlands finished on top with seven points, followed by Austraia with four, South Korea three and India one.
India splits points
with Korea
India salvaged some prestige by forcing a draw and sharing points with Korea 2-2 on Sunday. India had lost two of its previous matches, 2-5, to Holland and 1-3 against Australia. India's best performance came on Sunday and there were moments when it looked as though the Indians may even romp home winner. The frontline worked well with Deepak Thakur and Prabhjot Singh working harmoniously with the veteran Dhanraj Pillay. The Koreans started off cautiously but soon gained control over the proceedings. The eighth minute goal by Jong Hu Seo gave them the confidence to attack with vigour. It must be admitted that the Indian defence headed by Dilip Tirkey held on gamely and goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan brought off a few nice saves too. But India had to wait for the equaliser till late in the second half when a fierce shot from Dilip Tirkey ended in a goal. And within minutes came the lead from Dhanraj Pillay. But the joy was short-lived as Jong Hyun Hwang tapped in to restore parity. Interestingly, Korea has drawn all its three matches 2-2 against Australia and 1-1 against the home team. India has finished the tournament with a solitary point. The team now moves over to Cologne for the Champions Trophy starting on August 31.
