The lifting of the ban, imposed on the LTTE in January 1998, was a condition set by the Tigers for commencing direct talks. The Government had said the ban would be lifted 10 days before direct talks commence. According to the announcement, the ban would be reimposed if the talks, to commence on September 16 in Thailand, broke down or if the LTTE decided to leave the talks. The decision is to be gazetted shortly.
