MEPDA's efforts to boost shrimp exports

By Our Corporate Reporter

PONDICHERRY AUG. 26. The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) is making all out efforts to boost shipments of quality shrimps. It has created two model farming units in Nagapattinam and Seerkhazhi in Tamil Nadu to produce seabass shrimps, a new variety developed through the research initiative of CSRI. The units, based on Australian technology, will boost further the export potential of entrepreneurs who are already engaged in culturing the conventional Black Tiger pran scampi varieties.

Dedicating a microbiology lab and polymerised chain reaction technique of Oceanic Shrimping Ltd. in Marakanam near here, K. Jose Cyriac, Chairman of MPEDA, said the farming units were created at a cost of Rs. 2 crores.

Oceanic Shrimping, ventured into hatchery business in 1996, had expanded its capacity to 70 million Black Tiger shrimps to supply to West Bengal Fisheries. It has created a new hatchery with a capacity of 50 million seeds to produce scampi seeds in 2001 and commercial production was started in January last. The company has acquired a nearby processing unit. To eradicate virus causing mass mortality of shrimps, the company has now set up a microbiology lab and adopted the polymerised chain reaction technique.

The company possesses certification from the MPEDA for code of practice. The present capacity is 230 million Tiger prawn seeds and 50 million scampi seeds annually, according to A. Joseph Raj, Managing Director.
