According to police sources, smoke emanated from the house of K. Renganathan (45), a government doctor, on Azad Street. The neighbours alerted the police who broke into the locked house, where the doctor's wife, Usharani (40), son, R. Madhavakrishnan (10), daughter, Brindha alias Mythili (8), mother, Thiruvegadammal (60), and cousin, N. Sriram (22), were found dead. The bodies of Usharani and her children were partially burnt. All the deceased consumed cyanide-mixed cool drinks and bananas. While the whereabouts of Dr. Renganathan are not known, a handwritten note pasted on the main door said he was murdered and his mutilated body disposed of in Kodaikanal. The note was allegedly signed by ``Kandhu Vatti'' P. Chandra of Meenakshipuram, Madurai. Dr. Renganathan, working in the Virathanur primary health centre for the past seven years, is said to have been in debts. Besides obtaining loans from established institutions, he borrowed from lenders who charged a high rate of interest, it is said. However, the police suspect that the murders would have been committed by Dr. Renganathan himself unable to bear harassment by moneylenders.
