Stewart's feat

By Mohandas Menon

**The unbeaten 78 by Alec Stewart in the first innings was the second highest individual score by an English keeper at this venue. The highest still remains the 116 by Alan Knott against the West Indies in July 1976.

** The first innings lead of 355 runs was the third highest achieved by India in Tests. The top first innings leads for India remains the 400 runs against Australia at Calcutta in March 1998 and the 394 runs lead against the West Indies at Delhi in January 1979. However, it was India's highest first innings lead against England bettering the 274 runs at Madras in February 1993. It was also the highest first innings lead achieved by India in an away Test. The previous highest was the 266 runs also against England at the Oval in August 1990.

** The follow-on enforced by India was its 21st in Tests and its fifth against England. Previously India has enforced the follow-on against England — at Kanpur in 1961-62 (drawn), at the Oval in 1990 (drawn), at Calcutta in 1992-93 (won by 8 wkts) and at Madras in 1992-93 (won by innings & 22 runs).

** This was the only fourth occasion India was enforcing a follow-on on foreign soil. The first being against the West Indies at Kingston in January 1971, then against Australia at Sydney in January 1986 and against England at the Oval in August 1990. Despite the follow-on India could not win any of the Test — all were drawn!

** Naseer Hussain when on 76, became the sixth England captain to aggregate 2000 runs while leading the side. It was his 36th Test match as captain. The other England captains to do so are: Mike Atherton (3815 runs), Graham Gooch (3582), Peter May (3080), Ted Dexter (2427) and David Gower (2247).

** The unbeaten 90 by Hussain was the highest by an English captain against India at this venue. The previous highest was the unbeaten 31by Mike Gatting in June 1986.

** The unbeaten partnership of 91 runs between Hussain and Alec Stewart was the best for England against India at this venue. The pair just went past the previous best of 90 runs put on by Tom Graveney and Allan Watkins in June 1952.

** Sanjay Bangar's 2-54 was his personal best bowling figures of career. His previous best figures were the 1-63 against the West Indies at Georgetown in April 2002. His first victim was Merv Dillon.
