China assured of title

NEW DELHI AUG. 26. India continued to be in the second spot while China made sure of the World Youth (under-16) Chess Olympiad title with a round to spare in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

According to information provided by India's coach-cum-manager S. Vijay Sarathy, from the Malaysian Capital, India drew with Uzbekistan 2-2 in the eighth round before being held 2-2 by Iran in the ninth.

India now has 23.5 points — well behind China, which has an unbeatable 28 — followed by Ukraine and Indonesia, with 23 points each.

In the match against Uzbekistan, Deepan Chakravarty and G. Rohit won on the first and fourth boards, but Somak Palit and Deep Sengupta lost.

In the afternoon, India failed to get the better of Iran after Abhijit Gupta had quickly won his match on the fourth board. However, Palit's poor form continued as he lost again. Chakravarty and Rohit drew their matches.

Meanwhile, China made sure of the title with an emphatic 3.5-0.5 drubbing of Kazakhstan in the ninth round. In the eighth round, China had overcome Vietnam 2-5-1.5.

In the final round, China will be up against England, India faces Australia `A', Ukraine plays Malaysia `B' and Indonesia meets Iran.
