Golf

Dank weather and a few spells of showers midway through the round made the conditions difficult. The greens played slow while the rough offered more resistance than usual. Considering the situation, Ranjit and Vasudeva did well to keep themselves on track, on the par-72 Arnold Palmer-designed course. The day's score of 76 gave Ranjit and Vasudeva a two-stroke advantage over the duo of Ajay Kumar and Amardeep Malik in Group A (under-17). Jaskeerat Singh Dullet, who finished on top of the Indian Golf Union (IGU) merit list in 2001, was tied fifth with two others Sunil Kumar and Naseebuddin. The trio shot 79 apiece. In Group `B', Ajeetesh Sandhu led the field with a card of 80. Sandhu was three strokes ahead of Kunal Balhara (83). Ratul Sood was placed third with a round of 88. Amanjot Singh had the sole lead in category `C' with 79. Fatehvir Dhaliwal and Devanshu Bajaj were placed second with 81. The tournament is being conducted in four age categories with Group A, Group B (under-15) and Group C (under-13) playing 72 holes over four days. For the Group D (under-11) players, there will be only 54 holes over three days. The cut will be applied so that 50 per cent of the field will go into the final two rounds. For the first time, the juniors are being made to play from the black-tee to give them the feel of playing a longer course. "In all international junior tournaments, the tee-off is done from the black- tee and the Indians find it difficult to cope as they do not practice it here,'' said Mr. Chetan Singh, Member of the IGU Junior Committee. "This is a good start to give the juniors experience of international competition,'' he added. The scores (after 18 holes): Group A (under-17): Ranjit Singh and Karan Vasudeva 76; Ajay Kumar and Amardeep Malik 78; Jaskirat Singh Dullet, Sunil Kumar and Naseebuddin 79; R. Prithviraj 80; Himmat Singh 82; Aditya Singh, Sagar Bhatia, Suraj Karotia and Anirban Lahiri 83. Group B (under-15): Ajeetesh Sandhu 80; Kunal Balhara 83; Ratul Sood 88; Karan Bir Choudhary 91; Bhawani Kumar 92; Raj Randhawa and Gaganjit Bhullar 93; Rohit Singh and Sidharth Shriniwasan 94. Group C (under-13): Amanjot Singh 79; Fatehvir Singh and Devanshu Bajaj 81; Siddharth Seth and Rahul Bakshi 85; Saurabh Bhaduri 86; Rashid Khan and Madhav Soi 89; Tarun Raghavan 93; Himanshu Tejwani and Abhinav Lohan 95.
