Padukone clarifies

BANGALORE Aug. 27. The Arjuna Awards committee had made every effort to be fair in the nominations for the award while working within the guidelines issued by the Union Sports Ministry, said the Arjuna Award Selection Committee chairman, Prakash Padukone, in a press release here today.

"As per the guidelines, only those sportspersons who forwarded their applications through National Federations/Indian Olympic Association/State/Union Territory Governments within the prescribed date have been considered for the award. On behalf of the committee, I would like to reiterate that omissions if any, and as pointed out in some sections of the media, is due to strict adherence to the Ministry guidelines,'' Padukone stated in the press release.

Padukone also clarified the need to finetune the guidelines. He said: "The Committee also concedes that there is scope for further refinement of the guidelines so as to incorporate the broader spectrum of achievements over a five-year period and/or overall performance during a career, so as to reward consistency and not so much a one-off performance.'' — Our Sports Reporter
