Power tariff hike imminent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM AUG. 27. The Industries Minister, P. K. Kunhalikutty, today said the industries too should be ready to accept a hike in power tariff.

Speaking to reporters at a function here, he said that the hike, however, would not be a permanent one. It was meant to make good the additional expenses the KSEB had to incur due to the use of a higher proportion of costly thermal power following the weak monsoon this time.

He said he had explained to the industrialists the nature of the compulsions. The Cabinet is set to discuss the question of a power tariff hike on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the KSEB has decided not to spare any institutions which have failed to settle the bills on the power supplied to them. A meeting of top officials, convened by the Electricity Minister, Kadavoor Sivadasan, here today, decided that power supply to the private companies defaulting the settlement of bills should be discontinued forthwith. In the case of Government institutions, the Finance Department had given an undertaking to the KSEB that the payment arrears run up by them would be settled by the Government.
