We can do it again

Sir, — On poll reforms, we have had our very upright President speak and he asked our politicians to step back and think about what they were doing. They didn't. Instead they asked him to be careful and suggested that in this battle of right and might he should really join the mighty. It is time now to bring the people into the fight. We have to organise groups in each and every Parliamentary and Assembly constituency to make it clear to the local politicians and political workers that the people are ready for the battle. We did it once 55 years ago and we can do it again.

The President across the national border also has a part to play in our fight — and you should draw up a chart comparing information which the SC/EC rules would have given to the Indian voters, that which our politicians think they can reveal to us, and the information which the Pakistani politicians will have to give to their voters if they want to stand for election. Perhaps, even on democracy, we can learn from each other.

H. Kanwaljit Singh,
New Delhi
