Italy is champion

CHENNAI Aug. 29. Italy won the Rosenblum Cup in the World bridge championship, storming past Indonesia by a whopping margin of 160-70 IMPs, at Montreal on Wednesday. Poland claimed the bronze medal, beating Sweden.

Apart from this latest title, the Italian teams now hold the Olympiad, European Open, Mixed and Junior championship honours.

In the final, the Italians took an early lead of 41-27 and Indonesia could never recover, losing the next three sets 36-21, 47-13 and 36-9.

The focus now shifts to the Open pairs finals which will be played till Saturday. Sixty-six leading pairs have come through the qualifying rounds with two from India — Commonwealth bronze medallist K.R. Venkatraman and Sunit Choksi, and Anil Padaye and Debashish Roy, the current South Zone winners, who scored 51.27 and 52.38 per cent respectively in the semifinals. The Chennai pair of N.R. Kirubakaramurthy and B. Prabakar missed the qualifying mark of 50.77 per cent by a whisker (50.32).
