By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR AUG. 29. The Centre has agreed to release an interim financial assistance of Rs. 100 crores and 2 lakh tonnes of rice to enable the Orissa Government to start drought mitigation work, the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, said today.

Talking to presspersons on his return from New Delhi, Mr. Patnaik said the assurance had come from the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, who also said that a Central team would visit the State next month to assess the drought situation.

In a detailed memorandum, the State Government had recently sought Rs. 871 crores and 12 lakh tonnes of rice to begin labour intensive work and other programmes.
