dated August 31, 1952: Portraits of Poets

The Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department were planning to bring out a series of stamps printed for the first time in the country by the photogravure process. The series would comprise a galaxy of saint-poets and poets of India and would be released for sale all over the country on October 1, 1952 — eve of Gandhiji's birthday. As a first step the portraits of the following had been included: Kabir, Tulsidas, Meera, Surdas, Ghalib and Tagore. The first four belonged to the medieval period of Indian history and were essentially saint-poets devoted to the "Bhakti" cult. Ghalib was one of the foremost Urdu poets and Tagore, Nobel prize-winner, was internationally famous.
