This Day That Age
Sri Bharatikrishna Tirtha Maharaj, Sankaracharya of the Govardhan Peeta, Jagannath Puri, in an interview in Nagpur said he proposed to publish in about two dozen volumes his own commentary on the appendix of the Athrva Veda where mathematical formulae were found. These volumes would first be published in English, Hindi and Sanskrit and later in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali. His Holiness called his theme "Wonder of Vedic Mathematics". Some people had been asking him, the Sankaracharya said, whether this was magic or mathematics. It was both magic and mathematics, he said, magic before it was understood and mathematics after it was understood. According to His Holiness, these 16 formulae were capable of infinite application to problems of mathematics. Sri Sankaracharya's Bhashya did not touch this subject because he had not commented on the appendix portion of the Athrva Veda. "I think mine will be first commentary on these 16 sutras. I have not seen any published or unpublished work on these so far," His Holiness said. "There are no mathematical secrets unknown to Vedic Mathematics" according to him and he claimed that with instruction based on Vedic Mathematics he could turn out a complete mathematician in the course of a few months. His Holiness said that by applying these sutras, multiplication and division of huge figures could be done in a few moments without resorting to scores of steps required under the present system.
