Jammu & Kashmir
By Shujaat Bukhari
The candidate for the prestigious Budgam constituency has not been announced. It is now certain that Omar Abdullah would be the party's Chief Ministerial candidate as his father, the Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, has vacated the Ganderbal segment in favour of the son. According to the list approved by the party's parliamentary board, Shameema Firdous would be the first woman candidate fielded by the NC so far. She is now a member of the Legislative Council and will contest elections from Habbakadal that was represented by the late P.L. Handoo in the Assembly. The Kashmiri Pandits dominate this segment.
KRM threatens to pull out
The recently-floated Kashmir Resolution Movement (KRM) headed by the former Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Abdul Khaliq Hanief, today threatened to pull out of the electoral process in case adequate security was not provided to their candidates. "Militants do not threaten us as they realise we are on the right path.''
