Mayawati reverses order on reservation

Lucknow Aug. 30. In a dramatic turn-around, the Uttar Pradesh Government today rescinded its controversial order giving 50 per cent reservation to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes in sports colleges and hostels and in an angry fall-out, the Chief Minister, Mayawati, suspended the Sports Secretary for issuing the order ``without her knowledge.''

Claiming that the Principal Secretary (Sports), Harish Chandra, did not consult her in the matter, Ms. Mayawati wondered how ``in such a policy-based issue, of which I have no information, an official is having so much courage.'' She directed the State Chief Secretary to investigate the matter and take steps to ``punish'' Mr. Chandra.

However, in a separate order, the Government directed that 21 per cent of the fair price shops be allotted to the SCs, two per cent to the STs and 27 per cent to the OBCs. This was conveyed in a letter to all the District Magistrates and District Supply Officers by the Principal Secretary (Food and Civil Supplies), Khanjan Lal, official sources said.
