Cut costs in cinema

Sir, — In your Editorial, `Cut cinema costs' (Aug. 30), you have rightly concluded that there is an urgent need to cut down the cost of film production. As more than 50 per cent of the production cost goes to film artistes, it is this area in which the costs are to be checked.

With film production given the industry status, more transparency is required if institutional financing is to be involved to a greater extent. With Tamil Nadu boasting of only film-oriented Chief Ministers during the last three and a half decades and too much publicity being given to film and theatrical personalities, it is hardly surprising that film production cost is increasing enormously. Though it enjoys industry status and certain populace is gainfully employed, too much of time wastage in non-productive activities and taking the prime time of the public robs the potential growth of the States such as T.N., Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The three film dominant States in the country would have grown better if attention and focus are shifted to more productive purposes and asset creation activities.
