PATNA Sept. 3 . The RJD president, Laloo Prasad Yadav, has welcomed the Supreme Court's observations on the Gujarat election issue and has demanded the dismissal of the Narendra Modi Government and the recall of the Governor, Sunder Singh Bhandari.

Addressing a dharna of party workers here today to condemn Mr. Modi's gaurav yatra, now deferred by a couple of days, he said the apex court had clearly said that only the Election Commission could decide on the dates to hold elections and there was no alternative to dismissing the "communal-minded Gujarat Chief Minister".

The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, must also "recall the hardcore RSS Governor and appoint an impartial person to the post to govern the State".

Mr. Yadav said that it was the bounden duty of the President to ensure that favourable conditions were restored for another constitutional body to discharge its duties. While reviewing the Gujarat situation, the Election Commission found that it could not hold elections by the due date.

The RJD chief reiterated his charge that the post-Godhra violence in Gujarat had been sponsored by the BJP-led State Government. While the world condemned the carnage, the BJP and the RSS "considered it a matter of pride".

He contended that the BJP had decided to play the Hindu card and take out the yatra after the EC refused to hold elections early.

The RJD viewed the yatra as a serious matter as it could create disturbances in the country and the party "would not remain a silent spectator".

The RJD leader countered allegations against the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, and described her as the country's `bahu' and citizen. He added that it was up to the people to choose their Prime Minister.
