Veerappan's brother offers to go as emissary

By A.V. Ragunathan

SALEM SEPT. 3. Madhaiyan, elder brother of the forest brigand Veerappan, has offered to go as an emissary to persuade the latter to "turn over a new leaf."

In a letter to a former TMC functionary in Kolathur, the 70-year-old Madhaiyan, who is now serving a life sentence in the Coimbatore Central Prison, communicated his readiness to "convince" Veerappan to change his ways if he was let out on bail.

The letter, which arrived two days before the abduction of the former Karnataka Minister, H. Nagappa, has now been handed over to the Special Task Force.

Madhaiyan wrote that his family had suffered a great deal on account of the actions of his younger brother Veerappan. At present, Madhaiyan's wife was serving a prison term in Mysore. His son, Mani, had died in a road accident.

Madhaiyan was confident that as a blood brother Veerappan would definitely heed his advice. The former TMC functionary is now awaiting the reaction of the Tamil Nadu Government, which is totally opposed to sending any emissary from the State.
