The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, administered the oath of office to him. Mr. Shankar, who will have a four-year term, succeeds N. Vittal, whose tenure ended on Monday. The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, the Leader of the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi, and several Ministers were present.
