Kidambi triumphs

KOLKATA SEPT. 4. International Master Sundararajan Kidambi of Tamil Nadu emerged champion in the third WBCA FIDE rated chess tournament which concluded here on Wednesday.

For the 19-year-old Vivekananda College second year B.Com. student this was the first victory in an open tournament.

Kidambi and Saptarshi Roy of Bengal drew in five moves on the second board so did Grandmaster elect G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank, Chennai and IM Rahul Shetty of Maharashtra on their top board match in five moves.

Both Kidambi and Prakash ended with nine points each but Kidambi was declared the winner on better progressive score (60.5 against 58.0).

While Kidambi was richer by Rs. 25,000, the 30-year-old Prakash, an assistant manager in the central office of the bank, took home Rs. 18,000. Five players finished with 8.5.

On the progressive score, Saptarshi Roy and IM Neelotpal Das (both Bengal), IM Rahul Shetty of Maharashtra, R.K. Mishra of MP and M.R. Venkatesh of Tamil Nadu were placed in that order.

In the most interesting game of the day, young Rohan Vijay Shandilya of Jharkhand upset IM Shankar Roy of Bengal in 58 moves to jump to ninth position while Roy slipped to 24th.

In a Nimzo-Indian game, Rohan enjoyed a slight opening advantage and asked for a draw. Roy refused.

He blundered on move 19 which cost him a piece for three pawns. A stunning knight sacrifice by Rohan enabled him to win in 42 moves.
