Cricket
Definitely, Hyderabad coach Arshad Ayub's gamble of sending young Ibrahim Khaleel ahead of the more experienced J. Shivaji Yadav, who came at the fag-end of the chase, paid off well as Khaleel came up with a superbly-paced knock to guide his team from a seemingly, hopeless position at 161 for six in 40 overs on a matting wicket and an ugly ground, often testing the alacrity of the fielders because of the uneven strips. With the top-order failing to come good, including Rayudu (15, 29 balls, 2 x 4) who was lured to snick into wicketkeeper Ashish Asnodkar off slow bowler Shadab Jakati, the host was off to a dismal start. A. Nandakishore (7) slashed one on off-stump off Vinod Raghavan; Anirudh Singh (27, 5 x 4) played one from slow bowler Faisal Sheikh (27, 47 balls, 5 x 4) straight into lone slip fielder's hands. However, Vinay Kumar (36, 59 balls, 3 x 4) stemmed the rot for a while. The Goans bowled to the field and seemed in control of the match till the 39th over when Hyderabad was 150 for six. But, much to the Goan camp's chagrin, Ibrahim Khaleel, thriving on a dropped chance when Robin D'Souza at floored a mistimed sweep shot at mid-wicket off off-spinner Aditya Angle when he was on 22, made most of it chance with a wonderful blend of caution and aggression. In the company of southpaw Fiaz Ahmed (27, 25 balls, 2 x 4) he put on 73 runs for seventh wicket in 10.1 overs, which decisively sealed the fate of Goans. That was the phase when the fielding was erratic and the bowlers lost the steam. So much so that even a seasoned campaigner like Avinash Avare conceded 42 runs in a spell of four overs towards the end. What was impressive about Khaleel's batting was his improvisation to pick the gaps with delectable placements besides punching the odd short ball with disdain. It was certainly good to see a youngster steer the team home, cheered all the way back to the pavilion at the end of the match. Earlier, electing to bat, Goa put up a much better batting display than expected scoring a challenging 224 for nine with captain Manoj Joglekar (66, 89 balls, 3 x 4) being the top-scorer with good support from Swapnil Asnodkar (44, 81 balls, 6 x 4) and Aditya Angle (33, 57 balls). The two put on 83 runs for the fifth wicket which lent respectability to the team total after left-arm medium-pacer Vishnuvardhan struck the early blows to finish with figures of three for 48. His new ball partner Fiaz Ahmed (two for 33) was equal to the task. However, medium-pacer Shehnawaz and offie J.Shivaji Yadav (none for 45) were expensive and wicketless. Amay Khurasia's 105 (7 x 4, 2 x6) helped Madhya Pradesh score a four-wicket win over HCA President's XI at NFC Grounds. Stung by all-round criticism for its dismal show yesterday, the local outfit put up an improved display scoring a challenging 250 for seven with captain Vanka Pratap (96 not out, 6 x 4, 2 x 6) and Arvind Shetty (75, 7 x 4, 1 x 6) being the main scorers. However, Khurasia spoiled the impressive show by the host despite a fine spell from young, medium-pacer Ahmed Quadri (three for 48). In another match at AOC, fine bowling by left-arm spinner Dinesh Mongia (five for 30) helped Chemplast record a convincing, five-wicket win over CAB to hand the latter its second defeat in the event. Indian Airlines recorded a 25-run win over Chattisgarh in another match at ECIL Grounds with R.R.Parida (86, 5 x 4) and Sonu Sharma (three for 43) being the key performers. Sical scored its third win defeating Combined Districts XI by seven wickets at HMWSSB Grounds. The scores: Goa 224 for nine in 50 overs (Swapnil Asnodkar 44, Manoj Joglekar 66, Aditya Angle 33, J. Vishnuvardhan three for 48) lost to Hyderabad 225 for seven in 49.2 overs (D. Vinay Kumar 36, Ibrahim Khaleel 85 not out). At AOC: CAB 188 in 48.5 overs (Amitabh Chakravarthy 62, Rohan Gavasar 39, Dinesh Mongia five for 30) lost to Chemplast 189 for five in 42.3 overs (Badrinath 57, Hemang Badani 39, Harish 45 not out, S.S. Paul three for 52). At ECIL: Indian Airlines 253 (Manish Sharma 54, R.R. Parida 86, Rajesh Bhatia 47, Nishant Bahadur three for 17) bt Chattisgarh 228 for eight (J. Saxena 55, D.Rohit 42, Mujahit Haqui 46, Sonu Sharma three for 43). At Osmania: Goa 224 for nine (Swapnil Asnodkar 44, Manoj Joglekar 66, Aditya Angle 33, Vishnuvardhan three for 48) lost to Hyderabad 225 for seven in 49.2 overs (Vinay Kumar 36, Ibrahim Khaleel 85 not out). At RRC: Indian Railways 105 in 35.1 overs (Yera Goud 43, Sandeep Sawal four for 12) lost to MRF 106 for two in 25.1 overs (Ashish Kapoor 34, Akash Chopra 34 not out). At NFC: HCA President's XI 250 for seven (Vanka Pratap 96 not out, Arvind Shetty 75) lost to MPCA 251 for six in 48.5 overs (Amay Khurasia 105, Nitin Menon 36 not out, Ahmed Quadri three for 48). At HMWSSB: Combined Districts XI 121 in 33.5 overs (Yakub Pasha 39, Ganesh Kumar four for 27) lost to Sical 122 for three in 26.2 overs (Satyajit Medappa 32, Vasanth Sarvanan 35 not out).
