Prior to his elevation as Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Pande will work, as per the tradition, as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat during the transition period. The formal orders for Mr. Pande's new assignment are likely to be issued before the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, leaves on his U.S. tour on Monday. An officer of the 1965 batch of the IAS (U.P. cadre), Mr. Pande will only be the second person to graduate from the North Block to the Cabinet Secretariat. Earlier, Naresh Chandra moved from the Home Secretary office to the Cabinet Secretary office.
