Iftekhar Geelani chargesheeted

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI SEPT. 7. The Special Cell of the Delhi Police today chargesheeted Syed Iftekhar Geelani, Delhi bureau chief of Kashmir Times and son-in-law of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, for allegedly entering into a criminal conspiracy for collecting intelligence on deployment of Army and paramilitary forces in Jammu and Kashmir for Pakistan.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Sangita Dhingra Sehagal, took cognisance of the chargesheet and fixed September 16 for further proceedings as well as for hearing the bail application of the accused.

Mr. Geelani was arrested in June, following the seizure of a five-page document downloaded from the hard disc of his computer by the Income Tax Department.

On the basis of the document, described by the Special Cell as inimical to the security of the country, the accused was chargesheeted under Sections 3 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act read with Section 120-B and 292 of the Indian Penal Code.

The case was registered on the basis of a five-page document, which the Income Tax Department had seized from the residence of the accused in South Delhi.

The document was handed over to the Special Cell along with a complaint for a probe and registration of an FIR by a Deputy Director (Investigation) of the Income Tax Department. ``The information contained in the five-page document is calculated to be or might be or intended to be directly or indirectly useful to an enemy as well as related to a matter the disclosure of which is likely to affect the sovereignty and integrity of India and Jammu and Kashmir, and friendly relations with other countries,'' the chargesheet alleged.
