Letters to the Editor
Sir, The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's words (Sept. 6) have drawn attention to the long-neglected agonies of the Bhopal gas tragedy victims, and will hopefully have some positive effect. He has also unequivocally spelt out what we all know are the basic ideas of the freedom movement, culminating in the formation of the Republic, and the value of our pluralist heritage. His statements should send a clear message to fundamentalists of all kinds. What is encouraging is his inclusive view of the country's ethos and his conviction that India has tremendous potential for positive growth. He is not likely to be a `figurehead' under whose shadow injustice, intolerance and violence in the name of multinational corporations, religion or narrow nationalism can be promoted either overtly or covertly.
Vasantha Surya,
