Impact of global warming to be discussed

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI Sept. 9. India has proposed to take up in a big way the developing countries' concerns over the lack of adequate global mechanisms and measures to deal with the adverse impacts of global warming at the coming conference of parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Disclosing this, the Union Environment Minister, T.R. Baalu, said that though the catastrophic impacts of global warming had been recognised even when the Convention was adopted by the international community 10 years ago, no mechanisms or measures have been put together to deal with them so far.

India, he said, would particularly seek the establishment of a mechanism to provide both financial and technical help to the developing countries in taking up preventive measures.

Speaking to The Hindu, he rejected comments in a section of the press that India did not make any important inputs into the just concluded World Summit on Sustainable Development at Johannesburg.

On the contrary, he said, India was at the forefront of the fight against attempts by the U.S. and several other countries to dilute the Rio Declaration.

India, for instance, played a greater role in preventing attempts to do away with the concept of common but differentiated responsibility and in ensuring that the developed world reaffirm its commitment to contribute more towards activities aimed at sustainable development in the developing countries.
