Mahesh jumps to No. 4

NEW DELHI SEPT. 9. Mahesh Bhupathi has jumped to the No. 4 spot in the latest doubles ranking released by the ATP on Monday.

The 28-year-old has 4255 Entry System Points, to be fourth behind Daniel Nestor of Canada (5375), Mark Knowles of Bahamas (5225) and Max Mirnyi of Belarus (4325). Leander Paes is at No. 22 with 1955 points.

The US Open champions, Mahesh and Mirnyi are fifth in the team race with 534 points, behind Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor (1035), Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge (684), Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan (659) and Donald Johnson and Jared Palmer (616).

The World doubles championship, featuring the top eight teams, scheduled to be held in the week of November 4, is yet to be announced by the ATP.

Meanwhile, Mahesh has taken his season's earnings to $438,124 from the men's circuit and figures at 36th among the money earners. Lleyton Hewitt is at the top with $2,113,989 for the season, followed by Andre Agassi $1,639,486 and Pete Sampras $1,222,999.

Meanwhile, in the singles rankings, Rohan Bopanna tops the Indian list at 405 with 62 ATP points. Mustafa Ghouse (518), Prahlad Srinath (532), Sunil Kumar (539) are the others at the top of the Indian list.

Leander Paes has six points for an unflattering singles ranking of 984, while Mahesh has 12 points to be ranked 810. Harsh Mankad is expected to take a jump up from 1248, following his final appearance last week in the Futures tournament in Chennai.

Rohan Bopanna has a doubles ranking of 346, as he has accumulated 114 ATP points. He may be pressed to do doubles duty in the Davis Cup tie against Australia in Adelaide, as Mahesh has expressed his inability to compete because of a sore shoulder.

Mahesh has made it clear that he would be available for the Asian Games, as the Indian team can have a shot at the gold medals in the team event and doubles. The doctors in New York had advised Mahesh to rest his sore shoulder, which saw him getting broken four times in the last four matches of the US Open.
