Sharath Kamal, Anindita take honours

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD SEPT. 9. Defending champion and top seed, Sharath Kamal of Southern Railway (SR) retained the men's singles title, while Anindita Chakraborty of South Eastern Railway (SER) bagged the women's crown on the concluding day of the 50th All India inter-railway table tennis championship at the Railway Recreation Club indoor stadium here on Monday.

In the men's final, Sharath downed Subham Choudhary of Eastern Railway (ER) 7-11, 13-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-7, 14-12.

Subham found his rhythm straightaway to take the first game but in the second game, Sharath, who was down 2-5 at one stage, came back strongly to level at 5 all before winning 13-11.

Though the top seed was a trifle hasty in the third and committed errors, he hit peak form in the fourth. In the fifth game, Sharath was a little impatient which led him into errors but he fought to regain his concentration to take the lead.

In the crucial sixth game Sharath seemed to be racing to a victory at 9-2 when Subham came up with a late rally and drew level at 10 all.

Subham went onto lead 12-11 before Sharath steadied himself and fought hard to take the game and match at 14-12.

Anindita Chakraborty was in great form as she beat Sushmita Roy of Eastern Railway (ER) 11-7, 7-11, 11-4, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9.

Anindita dropped the two games due to her own mistakes. Bad luck saw some of her shots going into the net or out of the table but these were just temporary set backs which only served to delay the inevitable.
