Nirmal Mukherji

Sir, — I must thank Inder Malhotra for his profound obituary note on Nirmal Mukherji (Sept. 4). I had the privilege of working with Nirmal as a visiting professor at the prestigious Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi. That Nirmal was a brilliant administrator and a dedicated civil servant is well-known and has admirably been brought out in the tribute. He also had an incisive mind and a sharp intellect. At the weekly meetings of the CPR, we took up political and economic issues for discussion. He would go to the very roots of the issue, analyse it and provide a clear understanding of the problems involved. Nirmal had special interest in the problems of rural India or `Bharat' as he called it. He believed that uplift of the villages could be brought about by the villagers themselves through panchayati raj institutions.

B.M. Bhatia,
Delhi
