Three share lead

Chennai Sept. 12. It will take a very brave man or a rather foolish person to predict the winner of the Rs. 6 lakh Hyundai Open golf tournament at the Gymkhana Club course here after two rounds.

With two rounds to go, the competition at the very top is so intense that there was a three-way tie on Thursday and there are quite a few players who are capable of winning placed not far behind the leaders Mukesh Kumar, Rohtas Singh and Ashok Kumar.

Mukesh, Rohtas and Ashok are on 134 but there is still a lot of golf to be played and the ones behind them in the top 10 would not have given up hopes.

On a humid afternoon, The Hindu Open champion Mukesh Kumar shot a five under 65 while Rohtas, who played on this course when more than half his current colleagues had not even touched a club yet, shot a four under 66. Rookie Ashok Kumar had a superb round of five under 65. Mukesh played error-free golf for the most part and his only mistake came on the 15th hole where he mishit his second shot, landed in the bunker and then went well over the green before ending up with a bogey. He had three birdies on the way out and three more on the way home. ``I am playing well and I am ready to facing whatever challenge comes my way,'' said a confident Mukesh.

Rohtas too played consistently well. The 45-year old from Delhi had a solitary bogey on the 13th and five birdies in a round in which his best shot was a 40-ft birdie on the first hole. ``I can't complain after a round like that, can I'' asked a smiling Rohtas.

Meanwhile, local pro Loganathan Gopi fired a hole-in-one on the 196-yard third hole with a seven iron, the ball bouncing in after pitching five feet from the pin.

The Hindu Open amateur champion C.V. Yudvir consolidated his lead with a fine round of par 70. He has a two round total of 143 and the experienced Dhanasekar Nagaraj too played very well for a card of 72, which helps him stay in the second place at 149.

Leading pro scores: 134, Mukesh Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Rohtas Singh; 136, Mohammed Salim; 137, Firoz Ali, Monish Bindra; 138, Yusuf Ali, Sheeraz Khalra; 139, Rafiq Ali; 140, Basad Ali, Nabin Mondal, Mohammed Islam.
