Shiv Sena idol immersion peaceful

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI SEPt. 12. The Vinayaka idol immersion procession organised by the Shiv Sena (Tamil Nadu) passed off peacefully. Idols from various parts of the city and suburbs were brought to the Marina and immersed on Thursday evening.

The main procession started from the Jain Bhavan, Pulianthope High Road, which was flagged off by the State president of the party, G.Narayanan, at around 3-30 p.m. Three of the Vinayaka idols measured more than 15 feet. The tallest among them was 28 feet, followed by a 21 feet-high idol and 15 feet-high idol.

En route, due to the height of a few idols, the processionists had to chop the branches of some of the trees, to facilitate the free movement of the tall idols. When this was objected to by the locals, the police intervened and convinced the people for the need to chop the branches.

The procession passed through Strahans Road, DeMellows Road, Waltax Road, Muthusamy Bridge, Flag Staff Road and joined the Kamarajar Salai. The idols were brought in trucks, vans and carts which arrived at Seerani Arangam around 6-30 p.m.

Earlier, idols from Virugambakkam, Velachery, Koyambedu and other suburbs arrived at the Seerani Arangam and they were immersed at the sea, using a crane. The police had also arranged high mast lights for the convenience of immersing the idols.
