The objective was scientific harvesting of water which was now being wasted. Legislation would be brought to make rain water harvesting compulsory in multi-storeyed buildings, the Minister said in an official release. He said that 100 more units of the Varsha, the Government's water harvesting scheme for roof top harvesting of rain water at homes and institutions, would be set up before the coming monsoon. Varsha was being implemented in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts as the first step. It would benefit 2,420 families this financial year through 484 units. Each unit, serving five families, cost Rs. 62,000. Food grade plastic sheets would be fixed on rooftops to collect water. This would go through a filtering unit into a ground level tanks having a capacity for 25,000 litres.
