Musharraf giving lectures: Cong.

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT. 13. The Congress today denounced the statement of the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, on Jammu and Kashmir and called it a case of `doublespeak'.

Reacting to Gen. Musharraf's statement at the United Nations and elsewhere in the U.S., the Congress said that while the General was doing his worst to disrupt the holding of free and fair elections in the State, he was also giving `lectures' on the virtues of democracy.

``This is nothing, but another case of the devil quoting the scriptures,'' the party spokesman, S. Jaipal Reddy, said adding that Gen. Musharraf `cannot stomach' genuine elections in the State while he himself was denying democracy to his people.

He said Gen. Musharraf was making a `woeful mistake' if he thought that he could take the international opinion for a ride and was underestimating the will of the people of India to defend Jammu and Kashmir against Pakistan's subversive designs.
