Sena activists protest against idol removal

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM SEPT. 15. A tense situation prevailed for sometime at Attakulangara on Sunday night after Shiv Sena activists forced the closure of shops in protest against the police removal of a Ganapathy idol that had been erected in front of the Secretariat as part of the Vinayaka Chathurthy festival.

The police removed the idol on the instructions of the District Collector at around 10.30 p.m. The Shiv Sena had sought no prior permission to erect the idol, police said. It was removed in a police truck and deposited at the Attakulangara junction.

Irate Shiv Sena workers forcibly closed shops at Attakulangara. A police force led by the Assistant Commissioner (Traffic), Thomas Kutty, reached the spot to defuse the tension. Later, the idol was taken to the Sena headquarters.
