This was conveyed in a communication from the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs to the Kerala University. The university had approached the State Government for financial assistance to reconstruct the synthetic tracks at the stadium. The Sports Minister, K. Sudhakaran, and the Sports Council president, C. Mohanachandran, had also held discussions with the university officials on the matter. The Central sanction was made on the basis of a recommendation by the State Government, according to a press release from the Kerala University. Meanwhile, the Kerala University Vice-Chancellor, B. Ekbal, has convened a meeting on Thursday to discuss the proposal to renovate the synthetic track as well as the reforms to be undertaken by the university in the sports sector. The meeting is scheduled to be held in the Vice-Chancellor's chamber at 10.30 a.m. Among those who are expected to attend the talks are K. Mohankumar, MLA, and Koliakode Krishnan Nair, Syndicate members, C. Mohanachandran, the Sports Council president, A. Nizamuddin, A. A. Rashid and P. J. Vinod, Senate members, and Pathrose Mathai, former head of the Sports Department. The Opto Electronics department of the Kerala University, along with the Indore-based Centre for Advanced Studies, will organise a three-day national symposium on laser technology and its applications from November 14. The venue of the event is the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology. The symposium is sponsored by the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, Department of Atomic Energy. The symposium will focus on the latest advances in laser technology and its applications in various areas. As many as 250 papers will be presented on topics such as laser physics, laser technology, laser in material sciences, non-linear and quantum optics, laser applications in life sciences and medicine, laser plasma, and the use of lasers in communications and defence applications. Eminent persons to attend the symosium include D. D. Bhavalkar, Centre for Advanced Technology, Krishna Rao, Sree Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai, A. K. Sood and R. S. Sirohi, from the IITs in Bangalore and New Delhi respectively. An exhibition on laser equipment and optic instruments is also proposed as part of the symposium.
