By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM SEPT. 15 . The need for creating plastic-free zones in the city was stressed at an Open Forum on the `Adverse impact of plastic', organised by the State Centre of the World Wide Fund for Nature India in connection with the World Ozone Day celebrations here today. Speaking at the Open Forum, the Health Officer of the City Corporation, Dr. Jayalakshmi said the Corporation was considering taking effective steps to ban the use of plastic as well as check health hazards due to the use of plastic.

The CPI leader, K.V. Surendranath, spoke about the need to make legislations on this matter. He said that it was easily possible to make bags and other packing materials using bamboo, paper, cloth, jute and leaf. The secretary of the Khadi Board, M. Nandakumar stressed the need for promoting products made using recycled paper instead of using plastic.

The State director of the WWF, Sudha Soni, said the WWF would submit an action plan to the State Government and the Corporation seeking their help for the formation of a core group consisting of representatives of the Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi, residents' associations, State Pollution Control Board, various department stores, Biotech, garbage collecting agencies and the State Literacy Mission besides the representatives of the Corporation to create awareness against the use of plastic and create a "plastic-free city''.

However, Ms. Soni added that four residents' association in the Pettah ward had come forward for the implementation of plastic-free areas with the help of the WWF. She expressed the hope that more residents' associations would join hands with the WWF in this venture.
