ISRO's success

Sir, — Your Editorial `Another milestone for ISRO' (Sept. 14) has rightly focussed on the relevance of the successful launch of Metsat which is another feather in the Indian Space Research Organisation's cap. The long-felt need for a dedicated meteorological satellite is fulfilled. The ISRO has 20 more satellites and 16 launch vehicles scheduled in the Tenth Plan. The ISRO Chairman, K. Kasturirangan, has announced that the ISRO has plans to launch a lunar mission. No one has any doubt about the capability of ISRO to carry out such a programme. The question is whether we should fritter away our resources for such a fanciful project at present. Would it not be better to focus on programmes aimed at achieving total self-reliance in space technology and its applications, especially in the fields of education, communication, information, natural resources and environmental management that would benefit the common man? Moon landing programme can wait.

K.V. Ravindran Annur,

Payyanur, Kerala
