English is vital

Sir, — Mr. Shantharam's letter points out the pathetic state of affairs. We feel proud of his address in the national language. But we fail to convey to the world in clear terms our stand on sensitive issues which would serve as a fitting reply to the Pakistani President's speech. It is time our political leaders realised the importance of English and gave up their opportunistic patriotism.

Harilal. M,

Thiruvananthapuram

* * *

Sir, — The performance of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, in the U.S. is most unimpressive. He has not been able to articulate effectively India's case in respect of Kashmir whereas the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, has been successful in his media blitz. He has spent his stay totally in front of the media in addition to lecturing at the Harvard. There is no use of our crying hoarse that the international community is not understanding our position.

K. V. Chalam,

New Delhi
