Efforts on to trace missing girl

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM SEPT. 20. The city police are verifying information from various sources regarding the whereabouts of the 16-year-old girl who was reported missing from her relative's house in Pettah police station limits on May 22.

The girl, who is the daughter of a city-based Ayurveda physician, is suspected by the police to have "eloped'' with her 32-year-old neighbour, Sali.

However, as the girl is a minor, the police have pressed a charge of kidnapping against Sali.

Police said Sali had enticed the girl into eloping with him. The accused has a criminal history and had served a prison sentence in the Gulf for financial fraud.

The police, through the director of the Public Relations Department, had placed advertisements in all leading newspapers seeking information about the girl and Sali from the public. The advertisement placed at the behest of the City Police Commissioner, Rajan Singh, carried both their photographs.

Police have inspected the personal diary of the girl, a Plus Two student, in which she has detailed her year-long affair with Sali.

Meanwhile, the girl's parents had moved a habeas corpus petition in the High Court and sought a court order directing the police to trace the girl at the earliest. The Director General of Police, K.J. Joseph, is the first respondent in the petition.

In a related order, the High Court had placed on record its appreciation for the earnest efforts taken by the city police in attempting to trace the missing girl. Official sources said the city police were likely to handover the case to the Crime Branch.

Meanwhile, members of an action council formed for tracing the girl have accused the police of "in-efficiency and apathy'' in tracing the girl. The Kerala Gazetted Officers Association (KGOA) has also condemned the alleged indifference on the part of the police in tracing the missing girl.
