SRINAGAR SEPT. 20. Police today detained the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front acting chairman, Javid Ahmad Mir, and burst teargas shells to disperse the Hurriyat Conference supporters at an anti-election rally here.

Official sources said that a group of Hurriyat activists, led by Mohammad Maqbool Sofi, assembled outside the Jamia Masjid here shortly after Friday prayers and staged an anti-poll demonstration.

Carrying banners and placards denouncing the ongoing Assembly elections in the State, the protesters were joined by young boys. Police tried to disperse them by resorting to cane charge. They turned violent and pelted stones at the policemen, who in response, fired teargas shells. Mr. Sofi was detained during the protest. Earlier, in the morning, police took into custody the JKLF acting chairman and Hurriyat executive committee member, Javid Ahmad Mir, from Zainakadal locality of downtown Srinagar when he tried to take out an anti-election rally, the sources said— PTI
