Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy, the A.P. Congress Committee president, M. Satyanarayana Rao, Cuddapah MP, Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, former Rajampet MP, A. Sai Prathap and Congress leaders planted seven saplings at Veligallu in protest at the project making no headway since the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, laid the foundation stone for it on the eve of the Parliamentary elections seven years ago. The state of affairs was such that the foundation stone laid by the CM was missing and the dilapidated pedestal was surrounded by wild bushes and garbage, depicting the utter neglect of the project, he remarked. The State Government was neglecting the irrigation projects, particularly in the parched Rayalaseema region, Dr. Reddy lamented. The Chandrababu Naidu Government merely laid foundation stones for irrigation projects, but neither allotted funds nor took up works and forgot its electoral promises, alleged Satyanarayana Rao. He wondered what happened to the foundation stone laid by Mr. Naidu and alleged that the Government lacked sincerity in completing projects. Only the irrigation projects built during the Congress rule such as Srisailam, Somasila, Nagarjunasagar and Tungabhadra dam were serving the irrigation needs, but the TDP Government did not complete even one project, he alleged. Major irrigation projects all over the country were completed during Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi's tenures, he asserted. Not a single project was completed or new industries set up and power generation capacity was not enhanced during the TDP rule, he alleged.
