Clashes in Vadodara

Vadodara Sept. 20. One person was killed when police opened fire on two clashing groups in a fresh bout of communal violence that rocked the sensitive Fathepura locality of the city today when idols of Lord Ganesh were being taken for immersion. Police resorted to firing and lobbed teargas shells to scare away rampaging mobs, the City Police Commissioner, D.D. Tuteja, said.

Trouble started when people coming out of a mosque after the Friday prayers and those taking part in the immersion procession hurled stones and acid bottles at each other. Four persons received stab injuries and two were injured in the acid and stone-throwning incidents.

Thirty-eight persons were arrested.
