BANGALORE, SEPT. 21. The Bangalore based subsidiary of Texas Instruments has added yet another feather to its cap by developing, from "specification to silicon,'' the industry's highest performance, fully programmable digital media processor for broadband applications. Designated as TMS320DM642, this system-on-chip has on board multimedia and communication peripherals such as high-definition capable video ports, glueless Ethernet, multichannel audio and 66 MHz PCI connectivity. According to the project manager (digital signal processors), Karthikeyan Madathil, around 50 persons worked for a year to develop the chip. Outlining some of the outstanding features of the new processor, Avinash Gautam, general manager, DSP design at TI India, said it was fully object code compatible with TI's C64X generation of digital signal processors. The clock speed at 600 MHz is double that of the nearest competitor. It can do as much work in a cycle as can a 2.2 GHz Pentium processor but its power consumption is so low ( below 2 watts ) that it needs no fan cooling . Containing over two million gates, the chip uses TI's 0.13 micron fabrication technology and comes with a 538 pin package. The DM642 is capable of processing up to four simultaneous MPEG-2 video decodes at 30 frames per second and can do full main-profile-at-main-level MPEG-2 video encoding in real time. Because of its full software programmability, customers can readily develop their products with the latest algorithms, get them to market fast and even upgrade them remotely as new standards and technologies evolve. According to M. Harish, business development manager, semiconductor marketing and sales at TI India, the DM642 is tailor-made for the high definition TV market space. It will also find applications in the next generation Set Top Box, X-Box with real time encoding, multi-channel video and the like. The DM642 will be offered at both 500 MHz and 600 MHz clock speeds and is scheduled for sampling in late first quarter of 2003 , with volume production slated for third quarter of 2003. Pricing starts at $44.95 for the 500 MHz processor.
