New products in manufacturing intelligence

By S. Varadharajan

CHENNAI SEPT. 21. The Chennai-based Fifth Generation Technologies India Pvt Ltd (5G), a spin off of 5th Generation Technologies Inc., Canada and a technology driven infotech company, has launched two new products — Enterprise Watch Dog and Access Vision — at `Connect 2002', the second international exhibition and conference on IT, communication technologies and bio-informatics being held at the Chennai Trade Centre.

Sumitra Seshan, chief operating officer, Fifth Generation Technologies, told The Hindu that the Enterprise WatchDog would integrate VisualPlant to the business systems, including ERP, MRP, CMMS and APS systems.

Most business systems that have a direct impact on the plant floor rely almost entirely on a combination of manual data entry, calculations and assumptions to perform their functions, leaving much to be desired in terms of the timeliness and accuracy of the end result.

Until recently, a cost effective technology had not been available to bridge the gap between the control systems on the plant floor and the business systems, Ms. Sumitra Seshan said. Enterprise WatchDog was designed as a bi-directional transaction engine between the plant floor (VisualPlant) and the business systems (such as, SAP, Baan, Maximo, and DataStream).

Access Vision, a vision based access control system, was economical as compared to the conventional system. It would transcript visuals in the form of image and video to validate data stored by the system.

The person identification system and database would compare the image with the existing data in the system. The system was a completely self-contained and could be integrated with CCTV. It could be connected to other devices such as mobile phones

Over the years, 5G had provided market driven solutions to domain areas including logistics, manufacturing, hospitality, law, education, retailing and wholesale trading industries.

The company's international partners include Automatika Inc., Executive Manufacturing Technologies Inc., Thermo CRS of (all from Canada) and TechLink Web Media of the U.S.

Thermo CRS is a proven market leader in robotics and automation systems.

It is represented by Fifth Generation Technologies in India.
