CM's assurance to medicos

By Our Staff Reporter

Kochi Sept. 21. The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, has assured the striking students of the Cooperative Medical College (CMC) to resolve their problems but has not given any concrete proposals.

The students said that they would immediately withdraw the strike if the Minister of Cooperation gave them an assurance of setting up proper facilities immediately.

According to a release by the students union of the CMC, a memorandum was submitted to Mr. Antony, saying that he had to take the initiative in solving the problems of lack of facilities at the medical college, since the problems of the college concern both the Health and the Cooperation Departments.

In the memorandum, the students put forward the demand of utilising the entire General Hospital facilities for their studies.

They have also demanded an undertaking by the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education (CAPE), under which the college was started here, to complete the construction of the hospital and college premises at Kalamassery within two years.

According to the students, if the current obstacles in conducting the clinical studies at the General Hospital were due to the differences in the departments under which the college and the hospital remain, the college should be transferred to the Health Department for two years after which it may be taken over by the Cooperation Department.

This will set aside the fears of Kerala Government Medical Officers' Association (KGMOA) regarding any other department's interference in their work place, the release added.

The students also argued that CAPE should immediately complete the facilities of operation theatre, labour room, ICU and casualty at the 209-bed set up at the GH where the CMC Hospital was expected to function.

The management of the college, the students argue, had said that there is not enough space to set up these extra facilities at the GH. But they feel that these arguments do not stand any ground.
