Dr. Guha said the object-ive of the book was to discern historical, cultural, political, and religious facets of the country's cricket, and the undercurrent of their mutual relationships. He hit upon the fascinati-ng theme when he was asked to deliver a political lecture on an issue whose roots could be traced in the famous Poona Pact involving Mahatma Gandhiji and B.R. Ambedkar, he added. Dr. Guha said that the interesting and less publici-sed aspect in the context of Poona Pact was the political activities of a dalit cricketer, Palwankar Baloo, and his career as cricketer and political activist. Baloo was said to be the first slow bowler of the country. Thanking those who were responsible for his intellectual pursuit, Dr. Guha recalled his association with the Kannada literary critic, D.R. Nagaraj, and the noted columnist and English teacher, T.G. Vaidyanathan.
