Silk farmers are going in for other crops due to lack of Government support, they stated. Talking to reporters here today, they said there had been no response from the Central and State Governments to the protests of sericulturists all over the State. Assurances given to them on providing remunerative price for cocoons had not been fulfilled so far. Hiking import duty on raw silk from China to about 100 per cent, curbing smuggling of silk into the country and extending subsidies to mulberry cultivation required for silk production were some of the immediate steps needed from the Governments, they said. They requested the State Government to procure cocoons at minimum support price with market intervention through agriculture market committees. They stated that several silk farmers were leaving mulberry cultivation due to lack of Government support. The APRS planned a dharna at Hyderabad on September 23, they said. Criticising the State Government for not taking up relief measures in spite of existence of severe drought conditions, the APRS leaders demanded wage employment works immediately in rural areas. They noted that the APRS would stage `maha dharnas' at Hyderabad from October 2 to 4 on pending irrigation projects. They stated that the 14th State convention of APRS would be held at Anantapur in the first week of February next.
