Nine child labourers rescued in Hassan

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN SEPT. 21. The Hassan District Child Labour Project Society rescued nine child labourers here on Friday and rehabilitated them at Aikyalaya, a rehabilitation centre run by the Jeevandara Seva Kendra on Gorur Road. However, two of the children ran away, and police and the authorities concerned are making efforts to trace them and bring them back.

Labour Department officials told presspersons here on Saturday that the children were rescued from nine garages and engineering workshops along Gorur Road and Hosaline Road. They identified the children as Mubarak, Maulana Ali Khan, Girish, Siraj, Keshava, Dinesh, Gangadhar, Nagesh, and Wasim Akram. Nagesh and Akram ran away from the centre, they said.

This is the second instance when the society, headed by the Deputy Commissioner, L.K. Atheeq (Chairman), has rescued children from the bondage of child labour. Earlier, the society rescued five children from as many jewellery shops, and rehabilitated them at Aikyalaya. The local Jewellers' Association directed its members not to employ child labour.

The raids were carried out under the direction of Deputy Labour Commissioner, J.T. Jinkalappa, by a team led by Labour Officer, Gopal Gowda, and comprising the labour inspectors, Jairaj Prakash, A.V. Chalapathy, H.S. Shanker, and K. Rangaswamy.

The Pension Mohalla Station Sub-Inspector, Bhemmaiah, and his staff assisted the team.

Mr. Atheeq and the Superintendent of Police, M. Nanjundaswami, visited the rescued children at Aikyalaya on Saturday. Mr. Atheeq advised them to utilise the facilities provided at the centre, and make efforts to ensure a better future. He told them that the society was determined to cracking down on child labour in all its forms, as per the Supreme Court's directions.
